Amsterdam is home of 170 nationalities, and some of the dishes the immigrants brought to the city have been established as dutch national dishes, especially the Indonesian cuisine has had a considerable influence on dutch culinary customs. Amsterdam offers an overwhelming variety of restaurants, there is an appropriate place for every wallet and every taste. Here is a small selection: De Silveren Spiegel (The Silver Mirror), Kattengat 4-6, Tel.: 020-624 65 89, is one of the citys oldest restaurants, it openend its doors in 1614. His owner combines traditional dishes with a vanguarian touch. If you are planning a romatic dinner, Pier 10 (De Ruyterkade Steiger 10, Tel.: 020-427 23 10) is a good choice. The place used to be a post office, which has been transformed in a quiet restaurant with a nice ddecoration of flowers and candles. The chef offers a variety of dishes influenced by the french and dutch kitchen, completed by an oriental touch. The Hotel Okura has two restaurants, both decorated with Michelin Stars. The french Restaurant Ciel Blue (two stars) is located at the 23rd floor of the building, so in addition to an excellent cuisine you will enjoy great views over the city. Restaurant Yamazato offers more than 50 japanese dishes decorated with one Michelin Star. If you feel like pasta, Noa bar is the place to go (Leidsegracht 84, Tel.: 020-626 0802). NOA is an abreviation of “Noodles of Amsterdam” – the name is the concept. The dishes show an oriental influence and the Noa Bar is a place to see and to be seen – on of the In Spots of Amsterdam Pasta e Basta is another Pasta place (Nieuwe Spieglestraat 8, Tel.: 020 422 22 22). The restaurant is by no means spectacular, the italian style pasta and the buffet of antipasti are excellent! A resveration is a good idea! Bazar Amsteram (Albert Cuypstraat 182, Tel.: 020 675 05 44): a colourful place with dishes inspired by the North African cuisine, fun and not expensive! These are just a few possibilities to treat your tastebuds while visiting Amsterdam!
